Tensions are rising in the South China Sea as China’s largest coastguard vessel entered the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ). The 165-meter ‘monster ship’ arrived on July 2, and its presence is seen as an act of intimidation towards the smaller Asian neighbor. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) confirmed that the Chinese vessel was within their EEZ and questioned its intentions. The PCG stated that they will not be intimidated and will hold their ground. China’s embassy and foreign ministry have not responded to requests for comment. The South China Sea is a crucial trade route, with China claiming most of it. The Philippines and China recently agreed to work on improving mutual trust and managing maritime disputes.
